Positive, proactive, purposeful thinking provides energy, focus, and freedom.
Philippians 4:8 – Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
When you improve your thinking, your life improves as a natural consequence. Change starts in your head. It sounds easy but the truth is that we would rather change everything else – circumstances, relationships and even events – rather than change our mind. When we organize our thought life around Philippians 4:8, it will become clear what we are to think about. We will see clearly the goals and the picture of what we are to become.
Think about things that are True, Honest, Just, Pure, Lovely, and Good Reports…. This is the secret to a joy-filled life.
Much of life is an exercise in strengthening your mind. A flabby mind allows a continuous stream of thoughts swirling at 100 miles an hour, never channeled in a single direction for any length of time. Every thought you have or word you speak triggers an image consistent with it. Then, like a computer’s operating system, those images act on you. So make the inner shift from taking commands to giving commands, to becoming a deliberate thinker. Like anything else, with practice, activating the Philippians 4:8 principle will become a reflex.
We also find that what is in our heads eventually moves to our hearts. Be careful not to feed your thought life with negative thoughts as it is sure to become deeply embedded in your heart. It is an exercise. Just like physical exercise is important, spiritual exercise is even more so.
Take time this week to:
1. Dwell on the person you want to become. Do not allow any negative self-talk.
2. Act as if you are already the person you hope to become.
3. Every day think of one positive, proactive, purposeful thought and act on it and evaluate how you feel at the end of the day. You will be amazed!
Romans 12:2 – And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Psalm 49:3 – My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
Psalm 86:11 – Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
Psalm 86:12 – I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.
Proverbs 4:23 – Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Remember you are responsible for your life and one day you will give an account for every thought, word, or deed.
Romans 14:11,12 – For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Think today about ways you can glorify the God of this universe. When you tell HIS story, your story will be wonderful.
